13 is for B is for Burton

After attending the last day of the Luminance conference held at the BMCC in TriBeCa, I walked over to Burton's flagship store in SoHo, which was celebrating it's grand re-opening.

Movie premiere of Burton's 13

held at the Angel Orensanz Foundation located in LES

As it was the last day of New York Fashion Week, a burlesque-inspired fashion show was presented for Burton's new winter gear/clothing line. Personally, I thought they could have done without the dancers as they have nothing to do with snowboarding (nor getting the crowd amped for the movie). Just having the models perform the "stripping" aspect as they did would have made a tighter presentation and not make myself and some others near me think, "Why are we watching these dancers again?"

And now for the premiere,

13 showed some sick footage of riders dominating the slopes and urban terrain and is definitely worth watching such dynamic riders like Terje Haakonsen, Jeremy Jones, John Jackson, Mark McMorris, and Danny Davis, to name a few, just kill it.

But after having seen Travis Rice's The Art of Flight at the Beacon Theater just over a year ago, I must admit I was rather disappointed. Granted, that film was a full length documentary which was about twice as long as 13 and therefore had a greater breadth and depth of storytelling, but knowing that this kind of awesomeness is out there, I would have loved to have seen 13 reach for a similar high standard. The music could also have been more inspiring -- sorry! can't help but think of the likes of MGMT and The Naked and Famous in Travis's films...call me biased.

The party atmosphere, unique venue, a line-up that featured performances by Smoke L.E.S., Roofeeo (TV On The Radio), Flatbush Zombies and the RZA, a fashion show, free drinks, etc. made for an excellent way to celebrate the premiere, but presenting the film on two small screens without HD projectors definitely took away a lot of its magic -- it was kinda like a sticking a movie in the middle of an after-party of a premiere.
